Melamine vs. Porcelain: Who Will Win the Whiteboard War?

By Robert Doyle

Getting ready to buy a dry erase board for your office or home? There are two common types of boards for you to choose from, melamine boards and porcelain? No need to worry about which to choose because we have broken down for you the differences for you so you can make the right purchase on any budget.

Melamine Boards

What exactly is melamine? It is a composite of plastic film on white colored hardboard. There type of white boards tend to be a little less costly but they are not magnetic at all. They are very durable however, you have to make sure to take care of it. The melamine boards need to be cleaned immediately after each use or the markers will eventually stain. Make sure to use a dry-erase board cleaner and a microfiber cloth for cleaning versus a hard cleaner because it will literally eat away at the plastic coating decreasing the boards life.

Duramax Porcelain Surface WhiteboardPorcelain

If you want something that is going to last, then a porcelain dry erase board is the way to go. These boards are backed by metal, so they are magnetic. Furthermore, they are very resistant to staining so they are great for everyday use. We are not saying that you do not have to clean it, just not as often as other products. A porcelain board will run on the more expensive side but they can last a lifetime. To sum everything up, if you are on a tight budget, a melamine white board is that better choice, however, make sure to take care of it or it will not last very long. If you want a dry erase board for the long haul, then a porcelain board is the way to go. It will cost you more up front, but the durability is very high so you will not have to replace it often. Once you have chosen which kind of board is right for you, it’s time to shop! We offer a wide variety of both melamine and porcelain boards in one convenient place!
