Must-have office supplies for your new home office

If you have a new home office for your work, there's nothing more important than making sure you have the right tools to succeed. Yet very often people don't put much thought into choosing the essentials that enable them to be productive. We put together a list of some of the office supplies that everyone needs for a new home office.

Office supplies for your desk

Assuming you already have a computer and some office furniture, these are the most basic and most essential office supplies. At a minimum, you're going to need pens, pencils, an eraser, paper clips, highlighters and a trash can.

Paper

Unless you are really ready to go fully paperless, you are going to need a few different types of paper. Make sure you have at least one pad handy, and sticky notes to help you remember things you need to get done. Notepads can be extremely helpful to jot down ideas as they occur to you. You'll also need high-quality paper if you have a printer or copier, in which case it is normally safest to get the brand recommended by the manufacturer.

Stay organized

Life has never been more busy for most people than it is today. Yet an organized home office can help you stay on track to get more done in less time. Make sure you have a stapler and some folders to keep your papers where they need to be. Clear folders can be helpful for things you access on a regular basis, while binders are better for things you need to flick through quickly. The more granular you are in the way you organize your papers, the more time you save when you aren't looking for things.

Hang things up

The atmosphere where your work takes place makes all the difference to your productivity, so you should personalize it for your needs. For some people, that might mean a motivational poster; for others, a family portrait. Many people also benefit from whiteboards to keep track of projects and ideas. There is no right or wrong choice here - it depends on what fits best for you. In order to personalize your new home office, you'll need office supplies such as thumbtacks and pushpins to hang things up.
